ABOUT ME
I am Sofia, an artist, fashion pattern-maker, designer, seamstress and dressmaker.
My practice navigates between the visual arts and fashion, from an anti-racist perspective, exploring themes such as political sustainability, climate justice, ecology and textile repair.
This is my textile project and my own sewing workshop, Sofia Archer Lab., which functions as a laboratory for textile creation and experimentation. I have worked in pattern-making and product development, and I also create bespoke costumes and garments for individuals, organisations, the performing arts, dance and other brands seeking more responsible ways of producing.
Furthermore, I organise interdisciplinary activities and initiatives that link consumption, culture and fashion, as well as workshops on garment repair and textile recycling.
Through my craft and practice, I seek to acquire and share tools that activate new narratives, taking ‘making our own clothes’ as a starting point for self-management and emancipation, weaving relationships of collective resistance and enabling alternative ways of being in the world.
THE LAB.
From my textile creation laboratory, I explore political sustainability and critical thinking in relation to fashion.
My mission is to build a network of creativity through which to generate synergies between different disciplines, with the aim of reflecting on and imagining alternative futures and presents in which to live.
I have worked on creating costumes for the performing arts, on set design, and on bespoke pieces for other brands and projects. I also organise events, classes and talks on responsible consumption and climate justice, as well as workshops on clothing repair and textile recycling. I carry out educational work to build knowledge and foster critical thinking around the psychology of consumption, and I undertake artistic research that combines visual arts, craftsmanship and ecology.
You can visit the physical space, which is the shop and workshop, in the centre of Barcelona, in the Born neighbourhood. You’ll find it at Carrer de l’Allada-Vermell, 16.
